YOU MIGHT NOT BE INTERESTED.
(about three minutes long, but it may be something you want to share with friends or family, as a witness or in a Bible study setting)
Mr. Caveman found a new fruit at the far side of the forest, and he did not know if it was safe to eat, so he decided to ask some locals to enlighten him. Of course, if he found a large collection of human skeletons nearby, he might get the idea on his own. But as it turned out, there was neither a collection of skeletal remains nor any locals in the area.
He noticed that the particular trail was well travelled, so he decided to wait for others to come along. As they came and went, he asked each one if they knew anything about the fruit. No one knew anything, except that it looked good, smelled good, tasted good, and seemed to be something that was good for food. He spoke to over one hundred of the people who came along and then ate the fruit. No one could answer his question, but most of them seemed to enjoy the tasty and attractive fruit. No one got sick, no one complained of ill effects. After watching so many people eat and then go on with their journey, he decided to try the fruit himself.
It really was good. It was refreshing and invigorating. He was glad he finally ate it and only regretted that he had waited so long. He packed up some of the fruit for his journey, and off he went. Several hours down the road he saw a sign someone had put up, as a warning. DO NOT EAT THE FRUIT. Near the sign was a dead person, who apparently tried to warn people with his dying breath. Our traveler was relieved that he had stocked up on the other fruit earlier, since it seemed that living off the land was going to be limited in the days ahead.
Soon after seeing the sign and corpse, our traveler noticed more and more dead bodies along the road, and great numbers of bones scattered along the way. The numbers of dead were disturbing and they were in various levels of decay. The stench was stomach wrenching. He began to feel nauseous and could not wait until he got past this "valley of death." As the pain grew greater and forced him to stop along the road, he noticed that one, and then two and then several of the most recent corpses looked familiar. Then it dawned on him that these were the people he had questioned earlier about the fruit. They had been poisoned by the very thing that seemed to be so pleasant and satisfying earlier in their trip.
The warning, the sign was not in reference to a danger farther down the road, it was concerning the danger in the past. But it was too late. It was a death sentence more than a warning.
MY POINT... God has warned us throughout life about the poison of sin, and He has offered us the Antidote time and again. God continues to warn and call, even as people gorge themselves with the forbidden fruit of selfishness and the meat of rebellion.
It is as if no one believes the warning of God, the signs along the road, the messengers whom He has sent to tell the travellers about the death that sin brings and the deliverance from sin and death that God provides. And all we have to do is LOOK AND LIVE.
Such a tragedy.
