06/06/17 ONE DEMONSTRATES THE OTHER

My wonderful grand daughter just got married and is now in Scotland for her wedding trip. I know how busy travel can be and I also know how special this time should be for them.

In fact, since they are now one flesh, they will need to realign their attachments (family, friends, acquaintances, activities), and even end some attachments that are no longer valid, and are actually harmful.

Of course, this is true for everyone who has a relationship with Jesus. When we make a life commitment to Him, we all have to make major changes, and the longer we have lived a self serving life, the more changes there will be, and the more radical the changes will need to be. Husbands and wives are to live with the joy of their spouse ahead of their own joy, their own choices, their own attachments, and their own pursuits. It is not just a matter of only giving up that which is harmful to the relationship (though that is fundamental), it is also a matter of giving up that which is good, if it distracts from that which is best.

As I mentioned recently, I very seldom see a husband and wife who become the "One Flesh" that God intends for them to become, because either one or both of them refuses to die to self and live for one another. Again, this is the model we find in the spiritual relationship we have with Jesus. Sadly, there are few who enter into the fullness of the Holy Spirit because they refuse to come to the end of themselves.

Pretty much, the married life of a husband and wife is the outward evidence of the inward spiritual relationship that the person has with Christ. Certainly this kind of evaluation is essential to newly wedded people, but it is a good thing for all married couples to do. In fact, it is good for believers to take notice of their own relationship with God from time to time. Remember, nothing is more important and nothing should interfere with the relationship of the husband and wife, or the believer and Christ.
